After years of playing in sprawling post-rock bands, the members of Melbourne duo The Leafs were tired of only playing long instrumental songs and started banging out stripped-down inter-dimensional pop miniatures - best measured in seconds rather than minutes - on a 2-drum kit and a throwaway guitar with all the strings tuned to the same note. Fun, intense and beautiful, their debut EP ‘Space Elevator’ combines classic pop melody, the cubist screams and dumb-in-the-head rock of the early Pixies, and the poetry of 60s outsiders like Nick Drake.
